As a leader on tax reform, education and job training, and innovative ideas to reinvest in our nation’s distressed communities, U.S. Senator Tim Scott brings a unique perspective to the United States Senate.
Senator Scott grew up poor, in a single parent household in North Charleston, SC. He watched his mother work 16-hour days as a nurse’s assistant to keep him and his brother afloat. As a freshman in high school, Tim nearly failed out. But then he met his mentor who shared life-changing ideas and the basic principles of business with Tim. Through hard work, education, innovation and the discipline his mother gave him, he began the process of turning his life around. Tim graduated from Charles Southern University and eventually built his own successful small business.
Tim developed a mission to positively affect the lives of a billion people. That led him to public service, where he was elected to Charleston County Council, the South Carolina House of Representatives, the United States House of Representative and the United States Senate.
Since joining the Senate in 2013, Tim has been a national leader on efforts to bring opportunity to every American family. During his time in office, he has been a tireless advocate for creating more opportunities for families living paycheck-to-paycheck and helping children who are mired in poverty have access to quality education. His signature legislation creating Opportunity Zone was passed as part of the 2017 tax reform package and has the potential to bring billions of dollars of private investment to distressed communities across the country. Tim also plays a critical role in issues regarding workforce development, education and diversity.
Tim has served on the Senate Finance Committee; the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing & Urban Affairs; the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship; and, the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
